Description:

Requirements:

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in an office environment and on the floor of the Senate Chamber with exposure to everyday risks and discomforts, and requires the use of normal safety precautions. Work requires frequent walking, standing, bending, and carrying items up to 25 pounds, as well as regular use of typical office equipment, software programs, and methods of communication such as a computer, email, telephone, and photocopier. Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance are required for performance of duties. Work also requires physical presence in the office, except as otherwise required by the Office of the Secretary. This position is tied to the Senate floor schedule and requires working extended and unscheduled hours as dictated by the Senate.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Work requires a bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, history, political science, or related field, with one to three years of legislative administrative experience preferred; providing the applicant with the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
Knowledge of the legislative process, Senate procedures, organization, and congressional documents/terminology.
Basic knowledge of the Senate as an institution, Senate procedures and organization, and the legislative process preferred, with a desire and willingness to learn more about the history and operation of the Senate.
Ability to organize and comprehend legislative material and prepare concise written abstracts that conform to established requirements.
Ability to edit and proof documents for grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, spelling, and vocabulary.
Ability to use computer and relevant software programs.
Ability to use tact and diplomacy when dealing with others.
Ability to work extended and unscheduled hours as dictated by the Senate schedule.
Ability to be flexible and adaptable in a dynamic environment.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to follow departmental rules, regulations, procedures, and functions.
Ability to maintain professionalism in and around the Senate Chamber.
Ability to process, sort, and file forms and records.
Knowledge of the Senate structure and functions is a plus. Legislative administrative experience is also a plus.

Requirements to be recommended for promotion to Committee Scheduling Coordinator
(Pay Band 6):

Successful completion of Phase I - Demonstrated ability to perform the ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS of the position:
In addition to the requirements in Phase I above, demonstrated ability to work independently; ability to recognize issues and seek technical guidance from senior staff.
Demonstrated knowledge of the legislative process, Senate procedures, and committee actions.
Demonstrated ability to follow legislative floor action and recognize Senators by sight and voice.
Demonstrated ability to prepare and edit committee hearing write-ups.
Demonstrated ability to assist Assistant Editor and Editor in preparing statistical information for monthly "Resume of Congressional Activity".
