Description:

You will serve as a RIGGER in the RIGGING BRANCH, RIGGING AND OPERATIONS DIVISION, LIFTING AND HANDLING DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision
  • Ability to make difficult load routing judgements by considering size, shape, and location of object, availability and strength of overhead structure, surface conditions, obstacles, and surrounding openings.
  • Ability to determine exact placements of items such as padeyes, beam clamps, and chain falls used to support and balance load along the route.
  • Ability to have thorough knowledge of knots and hitches and be able to splice rope, cable, and fabricate various types of ship rigging and weight handling gear.
  • Ability to determine weights, stresses, strengths, and mechanical advantage.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings, and work orders.
