Description:

Store Workers serve in one or more commissary store departments (e.g., grocery, produce, warehouse, etc.) performing a variety of duties involved in receiving, handling, marking, preparing, displaying, and maintaining the stock of resale items.

Your resume should show your specific knowledge, skill, and abilities for this position in relation to each of the elements being measured.

Examples of qualifying experience:
  • stock turnover, shelf space allocation and customer preferences. Knowledge of brand names and sizes of grocery items or of the kinds and varieties of fresh fruits and vegetables to ensure the proper care and handling of certain items.
  • Locating of items to assist customers, work practices to prepare, arrange or stack items together while maintaining safety for patrons and other employees.
  • Preparing, arranging, or stacking items together for safety and neatness; rotating old stock.
  • Operating a forklift.

You will receive credit for all relevant qualifying experience (paid and unpaid), including volunteer work done through National Service program (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).


Physical requirements: (1) The work requires continuous walking, standing, bending, or stooping, and using arm movements to fill the store's shelves and counters. (3) While operating a forklift, the incumbent uses moderate physical effort in operating hand and foot controls while driving, turning, starting and stopping the forklift. Strain is caused by the vibration of the forklift. You will attest to your ability to perform these physical requirements in the Questionnaire.

Work environment : Most of the work is performed in the store display areas which are well lighted and maintained at a comfortable temperature. The store aisles are often crowded with customers and grocery carts. When working in the storage area or loading dock, the incumbent may be exposed to hot or cold weather or damp or drafty conditions. May be exposed to differences in temperatures in storing or obtaining items in refrigerated rooms. There is a danger of minor injuries such as cuts, scrapes, and bruises, or heat sealer bums. In addition, while operating a forklift, the incumbent may receive cuts, bruises and broken bones from shifting loads, toppling stacks, overturning forklifts, falling objects, or accidents with other moving equipment.
