Description:

This position is located in the Engineering Service at VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System - Dwight D. Eisenhower VA Medical Center in Leavenworth, KS. The Laundry Equipment Mechanic is responsible for maintaining and repairing all laundry equipment for the Laundry that services multiple VA Medical Centers.

Requirements:

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The physical demands of the position will be that normally required of a journeyman trades-person. Specific physical requirements (as detailed in the Certificate of Medical Examination) for the position include walking, standing, bending, sitting, crawling, and climbing, and lifting, arduous physical effort is required in the performance of manual tasks and continuous standing for extended periods of time when performing trade tasks. Some heavy lifting (equipment and materials), movement of ladders required along with the stamina to perform physical labor. Employee must have good vision, with or without glasses. May lift or carry tools, equipment, ladders, scaffolding, parts and supplies up to 50 pounds. May occasionally lift and carry items over 50 pounds. Use of fingers, hands required, walking, standing, repeated bending, both legs required, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, and hearing (aid permitted). Daily tasks are of sustained physical effort in handling equipment and other heavy objects when they are installed.

Employee may work from ladders, scaffolding, and/or hydraulic platforms. This position requires working in uncontrolled environments, in inclement weather conditions, and in confined or uncomfortable spaces. Many work sites are hot, dirty, dusty, greasy, poorly lit, cramped and with unpleasant odors. Occasionally it is subject to possible dangerous working conditions including exposure to hazards normally encountered in the hospital trades and various types of infections. May be subject to electrical shock and/or electrical burns, cuts, bruises, and strains. Required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary to accomplish assigned tasks in a safe manner. Must have thorough knowledge of trade techniques, materials and equipment in order to instruct employees. Work is performed inside, outside or both. Position is constantly subject to hand and eye injury and exposed to considerable dust and noise while working around equipment.

The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
