The Health Technician (Transportation) is assigned to Nursing Operations. The primary responsibilities of the incumbent are the safe and timely transporting of patients and facilitating patient transport throughout the Medical Center. The incumbent will support every clinic within the Medical Center including all ambulatory clinics and all inpatient wards on all floors of the Atrium and Emergency areas, all floors of the main bed tower in the main hospital, and all floors of CARES tower.Requirements:

- All Title 38 Veterans Canteen Service (VCS) employees must have served in their Excepted Service position for at least 90 days in order to be eligible for a position within the Competitive Service.
- Applicants who were previously selected under a Competitive Delegating Examining Unit (DEU) announcement must have served in their position for at least 90 days prior to being eligible for other positions within the Competitive Service.
- GS-4 Specialized Experience: You must have at least one full year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level GS-03 in Federal Service, that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. NOTE: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled., OR
- Education and Training (for GS-4): Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in subjects related to the position.
GS-4 Combination General Experience/Specialized Experience: You must have six (6) months of general experience AND six (6) months specialized experience.
General Experience: (1) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.
Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: knowledge of transportation and delivery principles and medical equipment and appropriate operation/positioning for transport, ability to provide information or assistance to customers, ability to use computers, software applications, databases, communication systems and automated systems to accomplish work, understanding of safety and infection control procedures, medical center programs, policies, and point of care locations. OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have two (2) years above high school with courses related to the occupation. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note : A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: The work is physically demanding, requiring extensive periods of walking, sitting, regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, pushing, pulling, reaching, carrying supplies, and similar activities. Other demands include completing or assisting in patient transfers, lifting and/or pushing equipment (e.g. stretchers, wheelchairs, etc.) The use of mechanical lifts when necessary and good body mechanics is expected. Work is strenuous at least one third of the time.
Incumbent will be caring for patients who may be uncooperative and combative due to physical or emotional illness. He/she must have the ability to function under pressure/stress typically associated with daily duties. Incumbent may be required to work holidays, weekends, or rotating tours intermittently.
